Strategy frameworks for all types of strategy project

The Hermitage Partners framework library brings together a comprehensive collection of the most valid and useful frameworks used by consultants and others to guide strategy development. Our aim here (as with all our work) is to help others improve the quality of their strategies.

In creating this library, we’ve sought to address two issues that we’ve found limit the effective use of strategy frameworks:

  • Many very useful frameworks don’t get used because they are not well known, and hard to find in usable form. We’ve addressed this by collecting all the frameworks that we have used or observed providing value.
  • Knowing when to use particular frameworks is a skill in itself, one that requires an understanding of the different contexts and stages of strategy development. Our solution has been to organise the library around a model that encompasses the stages, business drivers and solution types that cover the vast majority of strategy projects we’ve come across. This model is both a tool to navigate the framework library, and a valuable resource in its own right to help identify and define strategic problems.

Navigating the library

Using our model of strategy development, our library can be filtered in several ways to help you find what you are looking for. Below is a summary – click here for a more complete guide to navigating the library.

Different stages call for different tools, so the library can be filtered by stage of the strategy process, which includes:

  • Diagnosing and forecasting
  • Identifying and testing solutions
  • Fleshing out solutions
  • Planning and implementing

We also allow you to filter by business need (i.e. whether the framework is designed to support profit improvement, top-line growth or address uncertainty) and solution type (whether the framework is biased towards a particular type of solution – operational effectiveness, market positioning or reshaping/creating new markets).

In addition, a small number of frameworks are specifically designed for developing Group strategies (i.e. multiple business units).

To provide further guidance (and the benefit of our experience) we’ve also identified our top frameworks – the 20 or so that bring value to nearly any strategy development process.

If you know what (or who) you are looking for, you can also search for specific text.
